The cursor blinked obediently on the exhausting white screen—a rhythmic, cold vertical line resembling a mocking heartbeat.
Another hour had passed, and the page remained completely blank.
He sat in the deep shadow of an old coastal veranda, exhausted and disheartened.
The heavy, sun-drenched southern noon seemed to have suspended the air, turning his long-awaited novel into a deafening, impenetrable wall.
Broken, he leaned back in his chair, ready to accept his own helplessness.
And then he saw her—she was walking toward the sea, having stepped out from the searing light of the open terrace.
Inside him, everything turned over.
He couldn't see the features of her face—only the outlines of her silhouette, dressed in a minimalist black bandeau top and a floor-length skirt that seemed to be woven out of living, liquid shadows.
The sun pierced through the skirt, turning it into a translucent ink cloud, a smoky veil through which light breathed freely.
Yet, her silhouette remained entirely elusive, untouched.
The fabric behaved like living calligraphic ink spilled into crystal-clear water: the layers of silk shifted, flying in different rhythms, creating an illusion of absolute weightlessness without allowing the gaze to unravel the secret of her step.
It was the magic of contrast—the fabric felt as light as air, but held a noble, mysterious depth of color at the waist, where the shadows deepened into absolute blackness.
He couldn't tear his eyes away as, down by the sea, the coastal wind caught her skirt, billowing with every gust like an inky sail, through which her slender legs could finally be glimpsed.
Deeply moved, he returned home. Inspiration didn't just return—it consumed him.
The computer screen now felt too coarse, too dead, unable to capture his memories.
He needed a completely different, almost sacred contact with the text.
He reached for something he hadn't touched in years: a bottle of thick, dark ink, an old fountain pen, and a sheet of heavy, textured paper.
Dipping the nib into the inky depth—the exact color of her skirt fading into the distance—he began rapidly, in a single breath, to write from memory the fleeting, utterly mystical dance of the silk, her evanescent silhouette, and her graceful arms — painting her face in his imagination.
